Essex Old School Building- Design & Engineering for Adaptive Reuse
As part of their Senior Design Capstone course, Civil & Environmental Engineering students created design alternatives for new uses of the former school building in Essex, and provided specs and cost estimates for the final design.
Essex, Iowa, was interested in the redevelopment and reuse of a gymnasium within town. The city was looking for a community center, focused primarily on creating public spaces, hosting programming for youth and adults, and holding public events. The city was also interested in a storm shelter.
Treynor Pedestrian Infrastructure
As part of the Senior Design Capstone Course, Civil & Environmental Engineering students provided designs of pedestrian infrastructure and sidewalk connectivity for the city of Treynor, Iowa. The students also considered a redesign of the main street crossing. The students provided the city with plans for safe pedestrian crossing while maintaining farm vehicle access.
Sidney Safe Routes to School Trail Design
As part of the Senior Design Capstone Course, Civil & Environmental Engineering students identified trail route alternatives connecting the Sidney community to the Sidney High School located just outside of town, and provided the trail design and cost estimates for the selected route.
Schaller Rails to Trails Engineering
As part of their Senior Design Capstone course, Civil & Environmental Engineering students created design alternatives for a trail system in Schaller, Iowa. The trail site is located along an abandoned rail line within the city, and connects to the county trail system.
North Liberty Showcase Pavilion & Outdoor Performance Venue- Design & Engineering
As part of their Senior Design Capstone course, Civil & Environmental Engineering students prepared a design report and cost estimates for a "Showcase Pavilion & Outdoor Performance Venue" in North Liberty's Centennial Park.
Manning's Schmidt Building Restoration Design & Engineering
As part of the Senior Design Capstone Course, Civil & Environmental Engineering students conducted a structural analysis of the Schmidt Building in downtown Manning. Students also created design alternatives for the interior and facade of the building based on several options for future use of the building.
Jasper County Red Bridge Relocation
As part of the Senior Design Capstone Course, Civil & Environmental Engineering students provided the needed substructure, approaches, and cost estimates for relocation of the historic Red Bridge from one location in Jasper County to another.
Boone County Shelter Design at Forney's Point
As part of the Senior Design Capstone Course, Civil & Environmental Engineering students provided designs for an innovative open shelter in a unique overlook area in Boone County, as well as the design of an access road and parking facility, and related cost estimates.
Boone County Pedestrian Bridge Engineering & Design
As part of the Senior Design Capstone Course, Civil & Environmental Engineering students provided evaluation, design, and cost estimates of the superstructure and substructure for a single span pedestrian bridge that connects campground A to campground B in the Don Williams Recreation Area in Boone County.
Boone County Nature Center Design and Engineering
As part of the Senior Design Capstone Course, Civil & Environmental Engineering students provided design alternatives for a Nature Center building in Boone County.
Boone County Fish Barrier- Design and Engineering
As part of the Senior Design Capstone Course, Civil & Environmental Engineering students provided an evaluation of the spillway at the Don Williams Recreation Area and design of a barrier to prevent the loss of game and pan fish, and the related cost estimates.
Boone County Amphitheater Engineering & Design
As part of the Senior Design Capstone Course, Civil & Environmental Engineering students provided design alternatives for a "natural" amphitheater in Boone County's Don Williams Park, featuring materials native to Iowa, a functional stage and structure, trail connections, evaluation of flood events, and related cost estimates.
