As part of the Senior Design Capstone Course, Civil & Environmental Engineering students conducted a structural analysis of the Schmidt Building in downtown Manning.  Students also created design alternatives for the interior and facade of the building based on several options for future use of the building. 

Located on the most prominent corner of Manning—Highway 141 and Main Street- the building at 507 Main Street has significant history, but also has high risk of structural failure due to lack of maintenance. This two story brick commercial building features a distinctive curved parapet on the highway side of building. The windows and door openings feature segmental-arched brick lintels. A modern overhead garage door has been added where the original wagon door entry was located. There are some replaced and covered windows, and one door was added to an old window opening. The remnant of a painted sign wrapped around the southeast corner of the building is still visible.  City leaders hope this building will be saved and reused "before it becomes a pile of rubble on the most prominent corner of Manning."
