ECIA Communications Plan
Students from the School of Journalism & Mass Communication created a strategic communications plan for East Central Intergovernmental Association (ECIA) that established internal standards for communicating to members and residents in their region.
Delmar Storytelling and Community Development
Graduate students in the School of Urban & Regional Planning course Community Development in the Upper Midwest worked with 4th-6th graders from the Delwood Community School District in Delmar, IA to produce videos and books that tell the story of the community through interviews with longtime residents.
Pocket Neighborhood Design & Management
As part of their Senior Design Capstone course, Civil & Environmental Engineering students created the design and management of a pocket neighborhood for the East Central Intergovernmental Association (ECIA).
Mason City Public Transit Ridership Campaign
Students from the School of Journalism & Mass Communication developed a strategic marketing and communications campaign to attract new riders for the Mason City’s public transit system, using creative outreach materials and various communications platforms to reach target audiences.
Mason City Civic Engagement Campaign
Students from the School of Journalism & Mass Communication created a strategic marketing and communications campaign to encourage civic engagement among Mason City residents and to recruit volunteers to serve on local government boards.
Flooding Risk Assessment using HAZUS modeling
Students in the Department of Geographical and Sustainability Sciences course GIS for Environmental Studies course conducted a flooding risk assessment for the Cerro Gordo County Emergency Management Agency using HAZUS modeling software.
Bridge and Bikeway: Engineering & Design
As part of the Senior Design Capstone Course, Civil & Environmental Engineering students created a design of a bike trail extension and a multimodal bridge for the City of Mason City, IA.
Firehouse Restoration
As part of their Senior Design Capstone course, Civil & Environmental Engineering students provided a structural evaluation, feasibility study, and restoration alternative plans with cost estimates for a historic fire station in Mason City.
Mason City Community Mobile App Graphic Design
Students in the School of Art & Art History Graphic Design course designed a community-based mobile app for the City of Mason City.
Maquoketa Branding and Marketing
Students from the Tippie College of Business Marketing Institute created an integrated marketing communication plan that includes the new branding for the City of Maquoketa.
Mason City Farmers Market Study and Marketing
In a report to the City of Mason City and North Iowa Farmers’ Market Board of Directors, students in the Entrepreneurial Management Institute: Business Consulting class provided recommendations for a permanent location for a community farmers market based on preferred characteristics and potential sites.
Mason City Transit Study and Marketing
In a report to the City of Mason City, students in the Entrepreneurial Management Institute: Business Consulting class conducted market research and provided recommendations to attract new riders for the City’s public transit system.
By appealing to new target groups and individual riders of the metropolitan public transit system, Mason City officials hope to enhance the quality of life in the community, promote sustainability, and encourage workforce mobility and access to more entrepreneurialism and small business.
Edgewood Historical Museum Project
In a report to The Edgewood Museum Corporation, students in Heidi Lung's "Museums in the Digital Age" class recommended appropriate methods to digitize historical artifacts for a new community museum and developed a comprehensive communications plan for the organization.
Lost Nation Downtown Revitalization Study
Students in the Entrepreneurial Management Institute: Business Consulting class conducted research and made recommendations on best competitive practices to attract entrepreneurs and small entrepreneurial businesses to locate in downtown Lost Nation.
Regional Brownfields Inventory and Land Bank Feasibility Study
As part of their capstone project, second-year graduate students from the University of Iowa’s School of Urban & Regional Planning developed a process to inventory and prioritize brownfield sites on behalf of the East Central Intergovernmental Association (ECIA), and conducted a feasibility study for a regional land bank.
Prosperity Eastern Iowa: Program Evaluation & Plan
As part of their capstone project, second-year graduate students from the University of Iowa’s School of Urban & Regional Planning provided an update to the program structure and plans for The Petal Project, one of Prosperity Eastern Iowa’s (PEI) flagship economic development programs.
Mason City Community Plan for Sustainability
As part of their capstone project, second-year graduate students from the University of Iowa’s School of Urban & Regional Planning developed a sustainability plan for the City of Mason City.
Urban Ecology
Students in a geography class completed two separate projects for Iowa City. The first project focused on the ecological functions of roadside vegetation in Iowa City, including identification of roadside land area in the city that can be prioritized for re-planting and re-design as native vegetation areas. The second project focused on urban raptors.
Rural Workforce Solutions
Undergraduate students in the Entrepreneurial Management Institutes’ Business Consulting Course will partner with the Siouxland Interstate Metropolitan Planning Council to complete research on strategies for supporting the rural workforce of Woodbury County.
Rooftop Garden Design
The goal of this project was for senior engineering students to provide structural reviews, specifications, and recommendations for developing a community garden on the parking garage site. The project created a report, structural analysis and designs for rooftop garden, and a poster.
