Maquoketa Single Family Subdivision and Drainage Plan
Students in Civil and Environmental Engineering created plans for an affordable housing subdivision on five parcels of land in Maquoketa. The project includes stormwater management and remediation of a hazardous chemical.
The City tasked the design team to focus on dense development to keep the cost down and increase the number of families that can live there while also avoiding identical units. The team landed on three different kinds of housing at different price points: double wide, manufactured, and stick built. Layout of the streets demanded research on drainage and appropriate grading as the parcels are quite flat. A challenge to the site is the presence of Trichloroethylene (TCE), a volatile, colorless liquid organic chemical that can gather below ground. The team provided researched suggestions for avoiding accumulation of TCE in the built residences and remediation of the chemical throughout the property.
