For their capstone project, students in Civil and Environmental Engineering will design a 10-foot wide trail that includes pedestrian cross improvements at several intersections. The trail will run near a recreation complex, several schools, residential and commercial areas, and a senior housing unit. 

Making cities more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly is a goal for many communities. Improved and robust trail systems promote healthier lifestyles, provide easier mobility for those without access to cars, and encourage energy-efficent alternative transportation. West Burlington seeks a trail design to connect Agency Street between West Burlington Avenue and Gear Avenue. The route will connect commercial areas, core residential sections of the community, the Southeastern Community College, and Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center.  It will also provide a major connection between the Gear Avenue Trail and the planned Broadway trail.
